Above is a picture of a head-tax certificate
Chinese immigrants first came to Canada in the 1880s to help build the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Chinese immigrants provided cheap labor for the Canadians.
However, when the building of the railway was done and Chinese immigrants started to settle in Canada, many Canadian workers were upset that they were taking all of the jobs. The Chinese immigrants faced a great amount of discrimination. Eventually, Canadians introduced the head tax, which started as a 50 dollar price tag that was to pay for admission into Canada. This price eventually increased to $500.
In 1923, legislation was passed which banned Chinese immigrants into Canada completely. This is evidence that the twenties did not roar because this act of banning immigrants shows that the twenties were a time filled with discrimination. It does not represent what Canada stands for now. It also did not roar for the Chinese for discriminations reasons and also because they were forced to leave Canada and their hopes for getting settled in Canada, even after all the hard work they had done to build the Canadian Pacific Railway.
