The picture above is of Al Capone, a very succesful bootlegger in America. He made 0ver $100 000 000 a year in the bootlegging buisness.
In 1918, prohibition was nationally introduced in Canada. Prohibition was introduced in Canada
because many, such as the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), felt that alcohol was a waste of money and resources in a time where that money and resources could go to the war effort. It was a short lived prohibition as many opened speakeasies, which were secret, illegal alcohol shops. There were alsoother flaws to the prohibition such as doctors still being able to prescribe alcohol. Bootleggers, the smugglers of alcohol, took advantage of these flaws. The national prohibition ended in 1919, after the war was over.
The United States of America, however, introduced a prohibition in 1919, and the smuggling industry grew larger and larger in Canada, as bootleggers wereproviding alcohol for Americans. The Canadian Rocco Perri, was a significantfigure in the process of smuggling alcohol to USA. He provided alcohol for both the Americans and Canadians.
The 1920s roared for the bootleggers because they earned millions of dollars, and many harsh
consequences were not given to many of them. They often bribed and stopped higher officials from punishing/arresting them.
